How to Export with a Transparent Background

Learn how to export with a transparent background.

Step 1: Turn off the artboard fill

  1. Deselect everything by clicking anywhere outside of your artboard.

  2. Click the eyeball icon next to the color fill in the artboard section of the properties panel

Step 2: Export using a format that supports transparency

  1. Click the Export button in the upper right corner of the window

  2. Create a New Export by clicking the + icon in the top right corner of the window

  3. Set your export to a format that supports transparency

    1. WebM (VP9 or AV1):

      1. VP9: The best choice for embedding a video in a web page, and is used by YouTube for 1440p and 4K videos.

      2. AV1: One of the newest video codecs, and can produce files that are half the size as other codecs, without sacrificing quality. Many web browsers and devices don't yet support AV1; choose it only if you know it's suitable for your use case.

    2. PNG (beta): Animated PNG's are similar to a GIF, but support alpha transparency and more than 256 colors per frame. Many messenger apps and nearly all web browsers support animated PNG's today.

    3. ProRes (4444 Profile): Apple ProRes is a codec designed for video editing and post-production. Choose ProRes if you want to import your Fable project into video editing software and composite it with other videos.

  4. Once all settings are configured, click the Export button in the bottom right corner of the Export modal

Step 3: Track Export Progress

  1. The Export modal will close, and the export will be added to the Exports panel.

  2. Fable will queue, process, and begin the export.

  3. Track the progress using the progress bar below the export title.

Step 4: Download the Exported Video

  1. Once the export is complete, a download button will appear on the far right side of the export item.

  2. Click the download button to download your newly exported video.
